The Power of Sohum: A Guided Meditation

Sohum—these divine words hold deep meaning. Translated, Sohum means, “I am that.” It signifies the eternal truth: “I am, that is. I am the universe. A part of the universe is inside me.”

We are temples in which the divine resides. Moreover, these sacred words, when spoken correctly, have the power to connect us to the entire universe.

The Practice of Sohum Meditation

To begin, align your breath with your awareness:

  • As you breathe in, focus on your navel.
  • Similarly, as you breathe out, ground your awareness to the Earth.
  • Then, silently recite the mantra Sohum.

While the duration of the chant is not important, what truly matters is allowing the breath to flow naturally. In other words, avoid controlling your breath—it is an act of surrender, letting go of ego. When we align with the divine, everything flows effortlessly. For instance, even our breath moves harmoniously with the rhythm of the universe.

Discovering Universal Truth

Through Sohum meditation, we connect with the will of the universe, thereby gaining insight into the purpose of life. This practice reveals that each of us carries the qualities and powers of the divine. However, our focus on the material world often obscures this truth.

By withdrawing from sensory distractions and turning inward, we enter a state of deep relaxation and connection. Once aligned with this inner world, we become instruments of the universe. As a result, we experience an unbroken link to all creation.

Lessons from Nature

When we truly feel this connection, the universe reveals its wisdom. For example, observe the birds in the sky:

  • They fly effortlessly, trusting in the universe.
  • Furthermore, they fulfill their roles—searching for food, building nests, and raising their young—with ease.

Every creature, except humans, lives in harmony with its divine purpose. On the contrary, our egos often prevent us from embracing this natural flow. Therefore, by reciting Sohum, we can release the false identity of ego and rediscover our ability to “fly” freely.

Celebrate Life with Sohum

Chanting Sohum 108 times deepens our awareness. In addition, it reminds us that we are a drop in the infinite ocean, interconnected with the vastness of the universe. Ultimately, this simple vibration celebrates life, allowing us to experience the universe’s boundless power and joy.

Let us celebrate life—celebrate Sohum.
